History of St. Norbert School

During the 2012 -2013 school year, St. Norbert School celebrated its 95th birthday and began the countdown to its 100th birthday on September 29th 2017. A brief (and in part incomplete) history of the school was published, our hope is to produce a complete and comprehensive history of the school for the 100th.

St. Norbert Welcomes our new Principal!

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed Geralyn Lawler as the new principal of St. Norbert School. We are excited that Mrs. Lawler has accepted the position and is eager to lead St. Norbert School as we prepare to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Mrs. Lawler has experience both as a classroom teacher and an administrator. She taught Junior High at both St. Angela and Queen of All Saints. She was also the principal at St. Angela for 3 years, before becoming the Assistant Director for Catholic School Leadership at Loyola University. We are impressed with Mrs. Lawler’s commitment to Catholic education and her enthusiasm for creating the best environment for both students and teachers. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mrs. Lawler is a wife to Terry Lawler and the mother of five children ranging in age from 10 years old to 18 months old. She is an active member of St. Juliana parish in Edison Park. We want to thank the dedicated Search Committee members who vetted numerous candidates for the principal position. The committee was led by Dan Delany and included Rosemary West, Curt Schaller, Pat Maloney, Laurie Morrisey, Deirdre Manna, Lisa Wiatr, Caitlin Lee and Betty Parkinson. We also want to thank all of you for your continued support of St. Norbert School. We know that you will welcome Mrs. Lawler and make her proud to be part of the St. Norbert School Family.

St. Norbert is a Blue Ribbon School!

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized St. Norbert School as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School, the very highest educational honor in our country. In fact, St. Norbert is one of only 50 private schools in the nation receiving this honor.

To select National Blue Ribbon Schools, the Department of Education requested nominations from the top education official in every state and from the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). Schools may be nominated for this award in one of two categories. The first category is “Exemplary High Performing,” in which schools are recognized among their state’s highest performing schools. This is the category in which St. Norbert was nominated. The second category is “Exemplary Improving,” in which schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds demonstrate the most progress in improving student achievement levels. Nominated schools from both categories must complete a lengthy and thorough application process that details all aspects of the school’s program and pedagogy. The formal announcement is the last step in the process and the culmination of years of exemplary performance.

In his address Secretary Duncan said, "Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers. National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education." We at St. Norbert certainly embody the commitment and conviction that Secretary Duncan described. In addition, we put God and our faith first in all that we learn and do and when we serve others. I am blessed to see this in action every day, and I look forward to continuing to build on this success in the future.

Congratulations St. Norbert School!
